Picture This

Dynamic Time Stretching

Studio One now uses dynamic time-stretching to change tempos within an event, rather than having to slice the event into separate events with different tempos. Constrain position when dragging events between tracks within a defined range, use a keyboard shortcut to fast-forward and rewind by measures, and accelerate scrolling while dragging with the new Turbo mode. When you select a region on a track, you can now extend the selection using Shift and the Up/Down arrow keys. When you select and remove a range in the Edit menu, the time in between regions will be deleted and the regions will snap together.

Silent Way is a suite of plug-ins designed for use with analogue synthesisers, and especially as part of a modular analogue synthesiser system. The plug-ins produce no sound themselves, nor do they process sound - rather, they generate signals to be used as control voltages (CVs), which can be patched into the control inputs of oscillators, filters, VCAs etc. of an analogue system. Also, with the addition of the CV Input plug-in, it is possible to bring CVs from the synth into the computer, for recording or processing.

There are currently ten plug-ins in the Silent Way suite - Silent Way DC, Silent Way LFO, Silent Way Step LFO, Silent Way Quantizer, Silent Way Trigger, Silent Way CV Input, Silent Way CV To OSC, Silent Way CV To MIDI, Silent Way AC Encoder and Silent Way Voice Controller. These are described in more detail below. It is anticipated that more plug-ins will be added to the suite in the future - watch the website for product announcements.

HarmoniEQ is a parametric, harmonically-enhanced equalizer plug-in for professional music production applications. Harmonic enhancement HarmoniEQ applies to the sound is an inherent element of its overall sonic quality. HarmoniEQ also features dynamic equalization modes that offer you a vast palette of sound-shaping capabilities, suitable for mastering.

Since the easiness of tuning was one of our goals when producing this plug-in, HarmoniEQ features a single control surface to control the equalizer curve. HarmoniEQ's control surface workflow implements our best findings in the area of “user-equalizer” interaction. Just drag the filter control points to the right places. The Glue is a high quality analog modeled plug-in based on The classic 80's British big console buss compressor with some additional features. It uses the same high quality algorithms used in circuit simulation packages but optimised for real time use. It's quick and easy to use and has an uncluttered interface.
Additions over the original circuit include an ultra-fast attack time of up to 0.01mS and a Range knob which backs off the compression to give incredibly natural sounding attacks and limits the maximum amount of compression applied. Also included are external sidechain support and an adjustable sidechain highpass filter.

EchoLab is a plugin for creating a wide variety of delay and echo effects. It provides an arbitrary number of delaylines each of which may have feedback, may be placed independently in the stereo panorama and may be switched into 'ping-pong' mode (which means alternating panorama positions for successive echos). Moreover, each delayline has two filters associated with it - one sitting in its input path, the other one sitting in its feedback path. These filters themselves are made up from a series connection of an arbitrary number of stages and the frequency response of each such stage can be chosen from 8 different characteristics. Given that architecture, EchoLab allows for utmost flexibility in setting up rhythmic, filtered echo-patterns which form an essential ingredient in many styles of electronic music.

GTO and GTX are a pair of vintage style 'character' compressors, designed like their muscle car name-sakes for brute power, pure speed and to make a loud noise. They have everything you’d expect in a thorough-bred compressor, but are tuned for maximum control and ease of use, each with their own unique vintage colouring on top.

GTO is a peak compressor, designed for raw power and lightning response. GTX has a smoother RMS delivery with further refinement in the shape of a knee control. They both feature super-fast attack and release times and have a wide range of threshold, ratio and output boost, so they can cover everything from subtle correction to death-by-compression, with everything in between. With an external sidechain, wet/dry mix for NY compression and a hard limiter too, you can really push these babies to get pumping bass and block-rockin’ beats. The metering covers input, output and gain reduction, showing real-time and peak levels.

GTS is a hybrid of GTO and GTX, offering both peak & RMS compression as well as an additional Mojo knob.

GTA is a stripped-down, hot-rodded, limited edition version of GTO, with less features but more flavour.

QB3 is a vintage-style, 3-band EQ plug-in, with its own unique colouring and a few tricks up its sleeve. For each band you can adjust the centre frequency and gain. For the low and high shelving bands you can adjust the steepness of the slope, whilst for the mid peaking band you can adjust the bandwidth. This allows a range of sounds from steep, sharp cuts to smooth and gentle boosts.

But the Queen Bee is not a super clean and transparent plug-in. QB-3 features a pleasing combination of harmonics, saturation and low level noise to bring a subtle mojo to your sound. You also have the option to switch on a 40Hz cut to boost your low frequency headroom and a limiter to curb any peaks.

Spectral Conquest is an effect plug-in that lets you directly manipulate the frequency spectrum of audio signals.
The incoming signal is analysed via a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform), resulting in the familiar spectrum plot where the full audio spectrum is split into a number of narrow frequency bands. The outgoing audio is then regenerated by an Inverse FFT. The interesting bit is that the plug-in lets you modify the frequency spectrum in between.
Spectral Conquest allows you to modify the spectrum in two ways:

* By setting a multiplier for each frequency band. You can simply draw out the multipliers in the GUI.
* By applying a script to the spectrum. Some basic scripts are included with the plug-in to perform operations such as filtering and gating, but you can also write scripts yourself to do whatever you like.

If you find your production work can be slow and difficult, imprecise or arbitrary. Problems are difficult to track down and mixing can become a strange balance of guesswork and intuition, then you need some better tools.

SEQ 1 and SEQ 2 Master Edition
The NuGen Audio SEQ series, unlike many digital EQ\\\'s, is linear phase. This means that the phase shift is linear across the frequency spectrum, resulting in a natural sounding EQ change, and producing minimal phase artifacts.

Traditional EQ algorithms employ a mathematical technique known as IIR (Infinite Impulse Response). Whilst this provides low CPU usage and is relatively simple from a mathematical point of view, there is an important side effect known as Phase Warping. Digital EQ utilising the classic the IIR approach distorts the relationship between frequency and phase.

The computational algorithm employed in SEQ1 is based up on FFT (Fast Fourier Transform Analysis). This is a much more involved process, involving transformation of the audio data into the frequency domain, before applying frequency related computations and then transforming back into the temporal domain. The advantage of this process is that the frequency and temporal relationship remains intact -- linear phase transformation. The benefit of this method is that linear phase adjustments sound clearer, it is possible to create a much more transparent EQ using this technology. Phase Warping also affects the clarity of transients, as it causes Phase Smearing. Linear Phase calculations avoid this limitation, producing a sharper audio image.

Deft Compressor is an audio signal compressor plug-in for professional audio production applications. The characteristic feature of this compressor is its ability to produce “slim” and “slick” sounding compression, with intelligibility enhancement effect. Such result is achieved by compressor’s timing function that closely resembles the S-curve on both attack and release stages. S-curve timing function also helps compressor to sound “warm” and “clean” at most settings.

While at high attack settings Deft Compressor can be used to emphasize audio transients, it can also be used to “smash” audio signal if you use attack settings as low as 0.1 millisecond.

Thesys is a powerful and intuitive MIDI step-sequencer plug-in, giving you control over just about all aspects of your favorite MIDI devices. You can use Eloquence to create varied and organic bass lines, screaming leads, pulsating chords, and organic pad sounds in the studio or on stage.

For live musicians, Eloquence provides a versatile palette of performance options which can be triggered right from your MIDI keyboard: you can transpose, manipulate, twist up, mutate, and mangle your patterns without even getting near your computer.

Sequencer Tracks:

* Pitch: The pitch sequencer works in relation to the root key and transposes it by +/- 12 semitones.
In scale mode, the sequencer-entries work in-scale, that might exceed the octave range of the sequencer by quite a few octaves. In addition, the pitch sequencer has a flexible recording function.
* Lock: Lock is part of the pitch sequencer. An active step deactivates the MIDI transposing. This is useful for keeping important notes and chords in key while transposing the sequence.
* Gate: The Gate Sequencer creates notes and determines their velocity.
* Mute: The Mute Sequencer is part of the Gate Sequencer and mutes the selected step.
* Gate Time: The Gate Time Sequencer determines how long a note is held. Notes can be held up to four times the duration of a step.
* Octave: This sequencer moves the pitch the pitch by +/- 2 octaves.
* Pitchbend: Here you can select from 12 pitch bend figures to be engaged.
* Chord: A Chord is generated using the current note in the pitch sequencer as the root note. Six Variations and four wrap-arounds for major and minor plus six special chords like diminished and augmented are available.
* Break: This sequencer lets you set a multi-trigger at 2, 3, or 4 times the normal sequencer speed, playing the current scale up or downwards or just repeating the current note. 18 breaks are available.
* Random: Each sequencer step can be replaced by a random value. Minor and major chords can be individually randomized to maintain the harmonic structure.

Action Section:

* Gate Time: The Gate Time can be increased or decreased, depending on how long you press the button.
* Velo Gate: The note will only play if it is above the selected velocity threshold.
* Looper: The selected part of the sequence will be looped.
* Slowdown: The sequence slows down until it comes to a dead stop.
* Retrigger: Re-trigger the sequence by re-trigger-pressing the button; upon release, the sequencer continues at its normal position.
* Halftime: The sequence will play at half speed.
* Octave Up: The sequence will play one octave higher as long as you press the button.
* Mute: Mutes all data output.

Focusrite's Guitar FX Plug-in Suite includes eleven professional VST/AU plug- ins, ideal for today’s guitarist. These include five of the world’s finest guitar amp models and four distortion pedal effects, all courtesy of Italian software company 'Overloud'; experts in the field of accurate Guitar Amp modeling. A 'hot tuna' guitar tuner and 'smart' hum remover are also provided.
The amp models include plug-ins based on the Vox AC30, Marshall JCM900, Fender Twin, MESA Boogie Rectifier and the Fender Bassman. The pedal models include plug-ins based on the Boss DS-1, the Ibanez Tube Screamer, the Electro Harmonix Big Muff and the Dunlop Fuzz Face.
The amp and pedal models utilise Overloud's renowned analogue modelling technology, which faithfully reproduces every detail of an analogue tone. It also ensures perfect reproduction of parameter behaviour, so you always feel like you're controlling the real hardware. With Overloud's analogue modelling technology, each component of the schematic has its own mathematical model. After this rather raw scientific step, the resulting tone is fine tuned by ear. Overloud don't, unlike many modelling companies, use standard widely available DSP techniques to obtain a tone that only vaguely resembles the original one. Instead, custom developed non-standard DSP techniques reproduce every detail of the original tone.
Finally, each Guitar FX Suite plug-in provides a host of initial pre-sets, providing a number of great tones for you to audition immediately. You can also save and recall custom pre-sets, building a vast library of your own customised tones over time.
