PSP MixPack2 is a collection of five high-resolution,
high quality audio processors designed to improve the
quality of your digital audio tracks and mixes (VST
and RTAS for Windows. These processors were not
modeled on specific hardware analog processors, but
rather on the sound and features of many analog
circuits, with the goal of designing processors that
can assist you in taming the sterility and harshness
that often plagues digitally recorded audio. Dont
let the name of this bundle fool you - while we
worked hard to develop a plug-in pack that would help
your mixes shine, these plug-ins are high enough
quality to be at home in mastering or live tracking
situations as well. All plug-ins utilize 64-bit
double precision floating point algorithms throughout
their entire signal path and support sample rates of
up to 192kHz.

PSP MixBass2

PSP MixBass2 is a specialized low frequency processor
designed to help you achieve punchy, analog bass
sounds with your audio material. PSP MixBass2 sounds
really excellent with percussion loops, however it
can be used successfully to enhance the low end of
any audio material. How PSP MixBass2 will affect any
given audio material depends on the type of material
being processed.

PSP MixBass2 features a unique low-frequency
compression algorithm and low frequency harmonics
generator. There is a low-pass filter for the control
signal and a low cut filter within the signal path.
Finally, the Punch section includes a dynamically
controlled filter to emphasize or attenuate the
chosen mid-range frequency dynamically according to
the low-frequency material.

PSP MixTreble2

PSP MixTreble2 offers specialized processors designed
to extend the dynamic range, sharpness, clarity, and
spatiality of a signals treble frequencies, and
spatiality of high frequencies. It can improve
definition and sound quality of complete mixes, boost
characteristic features of acoustic instruments, and
revitalize archival recordings. PSP MixTreble2 can
help add presence to a track, as well as lower the
noise floor of a given track or complete mix. PSP
MixTreble2 incorporates the following four

Hiss remover - designed to help decrease the amount
of tape noise, extra-auditory high frequencies or
undesired reverberations in the high frequency range

Stereo enhancer - increases the spatiality of
processed material

Transient enhancer - designed for stimulating
flattened transients

Harmonics generator - designed for widening the
frequency range by enriching the harmonics lacking in
the processed signal.

Finally, PSP MixTreble2 also includes a switchable
soft-clipping algorithm which prevents the output
level from exceeding 0dBFS.

PSP MixPressor2

PSP MixPressor2 is a fully-featured, high precision
compressor designed to process either whole mixes or
single tracks. PSP MixPressor2 emulates the classic
characteristics of compressors with valve and opto
-electronic circuits as as classic modern compression
solutions. PSP MixPressor2 also offers a highly
configurable side-chain feature. The side-chain
filter has a significant effect on PSP MixPressor2s
sound and operation. The filter also enables the user
to operate the compressor as a de-esser or to lessen
the pumping effects of heavy kick drums and the like,
based on the side-chain settings. The PSP MixPressor2
offers a wide range of features:

a wide range of soft knee characteristics

either peak or RMS level detection

external or internal side chain signal with a smooth
bell-type filter

a output algorithm which can operate as either a
brick wall limiter or soft saturation algorithm to
preserve peaks above 0dBFS.

PSP MixPressor2 also works very well in combination
with the PSP MixSaturator2. With the PSP MixPressor2
before the PSP MixSaturator2 in the signal path
(think of a bus compressor before a tape machine),
you can employ both plug-ins simultaneously (at
subtle settings!) in order to impart a very cohesive
sound, like your mix was being produced on expensive
analog hardware. Of course, you can also reverse the
order, placing PSP MixSaturator2 before PSP
MixPressor2 - neverbe afraid to experiment!

PSP MixSaturator2

PSP MixSaturator2 simulates the way that analog
devices such as tape recorders and valve circuits
warm up and saturate your audio material. This is
achieved by adding harmonics, dedicated filtering,
and dynamic processing. PSP MixSaturator2 uses three
different algorithms to simulate these devices:

A bass frequency processing algorithm, which adds low
frequency harmonics and increases the magnitude
nonlinearities (more commonly known as the low
frequency bump) typical of analog tape recordings

A treble frequency processing algorithm, which
simulates tape saturation and high frequency loss at
high levels without increasing the level of
distortion and aliasing.

An overall saturation simulation algorithm, which
enables the user to choose between seven distinct
non-linearity curves characteristic of valve devices,
analog tape machines, and the sound of digital

PSP MixGate2

PSP MixGate2 is a professional quality high precision
noise gate that makes its debut in MixPack2 (hence
the 2 in the name, so its clear that this plug-in
only comes as part of MixPack2). The gate is fully
configurable and can operate fast enough for special
effects (such as stuttering audio) and smoothly
enough to gate unwanted noise without sounding

PSP MixGate2 includes both high and low pass filters
so as to tailor the control signal. By filtering out
unwanted frequencies, you can ensure that only the
desired frequency can trigger the gate.

Please Note: Filter has been discontinued. The Mac OS X versions of Filter will not be updated for compatibility with Intel Macs, nor will the PC versions be updated for Vista. It remains available for download by current owners who are still running compatible systems, but please note that we do not offer technical support relative to its use in unsupported operating systems.


Here is a basic introduction to the individual modules that make up Filter.


Filter can be instantiated in mono->mono, mono->stereo and stereo->stereo versions. The Input Meters change to reflect your choice. In the stereo->stereo version, the filters are true stereo filters. The input channels are NOT summed prior to being processed.


Here's where you make settings that affect the overall plug-in. Filter Display Style let's you select whether your want the filters' frequencies displayed in Hz or MIDI note name. The various Tempo controls let you select between an internal master clock or your host's MIDI clock, as well as set the internal clock in BPM or by Tap Tempo.

The MIDI Setup opens a dialog box for selecting which MIDI channels will supply the control signals for use in the Modulation Matrix and to let you assign MIDI channels for triggering the Envelope Generators.


Selects the routing configuration of the four filters. Use Filter as four independent parallel filters, one four-section series filter or in a variety of parallel/series combinations.


Filter includes four identical stereo filters that can be set in lowpass, highpass, bandpass and notch modes with variable resonance to create all the classic synth filter effects, plus a huge variety of new effects only possible by combining multiple filters. Each filter consists of three subsections:

Filter Settings:
Here's where you set each filter's frequency and resonance (Q) as well as choose between lowpass, highpass, bandpass and notch modes. To allow filtering from gentle to radical, each filter can be set for 2 pole (12 dB/oct), 4 pole (24 dB/oct), 6 pole (36 dB/oct), or 8 pole (48 dB/oct) response characteristics. Additionally, you can turn each filter on or off, solo it within a patch, or link its frequency to one of the other three filters.

Each filter has its own independent delay section with feedback and mix for stunning rhythmic delay effects. Each filter's Delay section can be patched pre- or post-filter and can be used alone with no filtering if desired. And like all of Filter's time-based parameters, the delay time can be set in milliseconds (up to 2 seconds) or in beats or fractional beats synced to the master tempo.

Here's where you can set each filter's level relative to the other filters in a patch, invert the phase of the filter's output and pan the filter's output in the stereo field.


To help you construct complex multi-filter effects, this display graphically represents the response curves of the currently active filters and allows direct graphic manipulation of each filter's frequency and resonance.


Each of the four Function Generators provide both an Envelope Generator and an LFO (although you can only see one at a time), giving a total of 4 Envelope Generators and 4 LFOs simultaneously.

Each Low Frequency Oscillator offers a choice of 10 different waveforms, including three different types of random waves. Each LFO rate can be set in Hertz or BPM and, like all of the time-based parameters in Filter, can be synced to the master tempo.

Envelope Generators:
As a modulation source, each Envelope Generator offers Delay, Attack, Decay, Sustain Level, Hold Time, and Release parameters and can be triggered by one of the Rhythm Generators or by MIDI. All of an Envelope's time and rate-based parameters can be set in absolute time or synced to the song's master tempo.


For effects like classic auto-wah (and a lot more), the Envelope Follower lets you control filter parameters with the dynamic characteristics of your input audio by providing a control signal that is proportional to the input audio's amplitude. The Attack and Decay controls allow you to add a selectable amount of lag to the respective portions of the signal.


Two clocked drum machine style rhythm generators designed to trigger the envelope generators and/or be used as a Mod Matrix source let you easily program loop-based grooves or complex polyrhythms. And of course, their tempo can be set in BPM or synced to the master tempo.


Filter's powerful Modulation Matrix lets you bring your patches to life by routing the various internal control sources (as well as external MIDI controllers) to virtually all of Filter's key parameters. Any source can control multiple destinations and any destination can be controlled by multiple sources. You can even use one Mod Matrix patch to control the amount of modulation of another Mod Matrix patch. The mind boggles.

If the DX-9 was the big embarrassment of the DX family for its design limitations, the DX-100 was the unexpected smash success. It was a board that should have failed, and didn't.

Its beefier twin, the DX-27, had the sturdier case and full-sized keys, but was otherwise identical, down to the presets and internal logic. And yet, the DX-27 is barely a step above the DX-9 on the used-gear junkpile these days. I can only imagine it's because folks don't realize that you can get all the features of the DX-100 with an added full-sized 61-key (albeit not velocity sensitive) keyboard for pittance. DX-100's are collectible. DX-27's? Doorstops. Do yourself a favor, friends, and if you can't find a good price on a DX-100, check out the DX-27. Best-kept secret. :)

But back to the DX-100.

Why should it have failed? Let's see. For one, it used the same disastrous tape hookup that the DX-9 did, and no cartridge interface. Its 49-key range was an octave short of the industry standard 61, and the keys weren't full-size -- they were mini-keys, a nightmare for hands used to standard piano keys. No velocity sensitivity. No effects. Odd layout, designed for use slung over the shoulder with a strap, Eighties style...a trend that mercifully died with Terminator sunglasses, legwarmers and cement-hold hairspray.

Why didn't it fail? Three reasons. One, it was extremely affordable. It debuted at $445 -- a steal for a genuine FM synthesizer with the same 4OP matrix we knew and loved from higher-end boards. Two, the board fixed the DX-9's memory limitation problem by offering 192 ROM presets. Three, oh, what ROM presets they were! Especially the basses -- the DX-100 has a few legendary bass preset, including Easy Synth (the famous DX-100 bass preset), Elec Bass, Mono Bass (adjust portamento to taste), WOW, Metal Keys, and its own unique spin on the sample-and-hold SH Bass. (Use the Mod Wheel to make the magic happen.) If they sound a little tinny to your ears now, remember, fat basses love tube saturation! You can use FM8's effects rack, switch on Tube Amp and Cabinet, and see an immediate fattening, or use Antares Tube, Amplitube, Vintage Channel, PSP Vintage Warmer, or your own favorite sound-sweetening tube simulation VST to make it really shine.

The general consensus is that the other presets are weak, but I'm not sure I agree with that. There are some gorgeous electric pianos, a wide range of strings (including the sublime Silk Cello), powerhouse patches like the ancestor of the V50's Powerbrass, or the eerie whalesong of Waves. I think this preset collection is really quite impressive, and given the DX-100's are quite affordable on the used market, and DX-27's even more so -- this just might be a good bet for your first 4OP synth, if you're shopping. Meanwhile, try playing with FM8's arpeggiator with one of the chromatic percussive presets, and wham, you're Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran in seconds -- those FM vibes are much cooler than his poor, sick little overdriven Wasp.

You'll hear the DX-100 featured heavily in Orbital, Scanner, and Jean-Michel Jarre's work, quite a hefty curriculum vitae for a board marketed as a low-end home synth!

Sysex dumps are included. FM7 users please accept my apologies; the FM7 version isn't ready at this time, but I've included the Sysex for you to import. Very few patches needed heavy modification; the main problem I ran into was the "too much vibrato" problem, which could be solved by setting the LFO 1 value in the matrix view to slightly more than half its current value, or the "BC patches are silent" problem, which can be circumvented by removing all BC and Controller 1 values from the matrix completely. (The synths had a switch which disabled BC/C1 dependence if these add-ons weren't plugged in, but FM7/FM8 isn't that bright.)
