A percussion break you're probably not familiar with. From a jazz compilation cd.

A punchy break you're probably not familiar with. From a funk compilation cd.

Boymerang - Balance of the force
A Fat cymbal break thats been used in tunes like 'Trinity - Picture on the wall', 'Dillinja - Silver blade' and 'Invaders - Feel it' to name just a few. From album cd.

Cameo - Word up
Sounds like some drum machine business. From a funk compilation cd.

Dennis Coffey - Scorpio
A long break thats been used in tunes like 'Cyantific - Good Weather', 'Roni Size & Reprazent - Share the fall' and 'A Sides - Spread Love'. This one's over a minute long. From a compilation cd.

Dyke & the Blazers - Let a woman be a woman, let a man be a man
The break used in 'Digital & Spirit - Phantom force', 'Roni Size - Feel the heat' and 'John B - The gate'. From a funk compilation cd.

Eddie Henderson - Kumquat Kids
Another break you've probably never heard before. From a jazz compilation cd.

Headhunters - God made me funky
This is Herbie Hancock's band and this break has been used in tunes like 'Ed Rush & Optical - Bacteria' and 'Sonic & Silver - Ghost train'. From their album cd.

Houston Outlaws - Soul power
A thin yet soild sounding break. From a funk compilation cd.

Ike & Tina Turner - Funky Mule
This has been used in tunes like 'Dylan & Loxy - Let the bass kick' and '4 Hero - Escape that'. Also included are the less well known cymbal breaks. From their cd album.

James Brown - Funky drummer
This break needs no introduction. Used in tunes like 'LL Cool J - Mama said knock you out' and 'Marcus Intalex & S.T. Files - Warp 1'. From a funk compilation cd.

A solid and punchy break. From a funk compilation cd.

Jimmy McGriff - The worm
The break with the 4 to the floor percussion going on. Used in tunes like 'Calibre - Future life', 'Calibre - Need it want it' and 'Ed Rush & Optical - Rock the house'. Very popular in old jungle tunes too. From a jazz compilation cd.

Juice - Catch A Groove
A break that's been around for a while but hasn't really been used in any big tunes yet. From a compilation cd. (Added 25/04/04)

Kool & the gang - N.T.
A familiar sounding break you've probably heard in some jungle tunes. From a funk compilation cd.

Led Zeppelin - When the levee breaks
A hollow sounding classic break. Used in tunes like 'Eminem - Kim'. From their album cd.

Lyn Collins - Think
All the different breaks from this tune are in here, including the famous tambourine. As used in 'Total science - Method', 'Jaheim - Put your woman first (Calibre remix)' and 'Leviticus - The burial'. From a funk compilation cd.

Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band - Apache
This break is over one and a half minutes long. This is the break used in 'Nas - Made you look', 'Goldie - Timeless', 'High Contrast - Savoir Faire', 'Baron - High Fidelity' and many more. From a funk compilation cd.

Mtume - Juicy Fruit
A punchy drum machine break. Used in tunes like 'Notorious BIG - Juicy'. From a motown compilation cd.

Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers - Got Myself A Good Man

Ramsey Lewis - Back in the U.S.S.R.
A bouncing and hollow sounding break. From a funk compilation cd.

Simply Red - She's Got It Bad
A simple but very cool break which has been used in tunes like 'Peshay - Vocal Tune'. From album cd. (Added 25/04/04)

Skull Snaps - It's a new day
As used in 'DJ Zinc - Ska' and 'Ed Rush & Optical - Pacman'. Also in here is the mysterious percussion and tambourine bit that you probably didn't know about. From a funk compilation cd.

This break has been used in tunes like 'Busta Rhymes - Woo hah (Origin Unknown remix)'. From a funk compilation cd.

The James Brown orchestra - Tighten Up
This is rare so consider yourself lucky. You can hear this in such tunes as 'Digital - Daylight Robbery', 'Photek - The seven samurai', 'Digital & Spirit - Ras 78' and 'A Sides - Calibre (Ed Rush remix)'. From an album cd. (Added 04/12/03)

A not so well known break with percussion going on underneath it. From a funk compilation cd.

The Winstons - Amen, Brother
How could a breaks site like this be complete without the amen? Don't spend ridiculous amounts of money to buy the original 12", take this one from cd instead. This has been used in hundreds of tunes, including 'Ray Keith - Renegade Terrorist (PA Mix)'. From a compilation cd. (Added 30/01/04)

Coldcut breaks:
All but one of these breaks were found on a (now-deleted?) sample CD called 'Coldcut's Kleptomania'. I don't know the original sources of many of them. 'Full break' is a loop taken from a track called 'Bang On A Drum', which appears towards the end of Coldcut's 'Seven Minutes of Madness' remix of 'Paid in Full' by Eric B and Rakim. All of these were sampled at 22.05 kHz. Enormous respect is due to Coldcut and the whole Ninja state of mind.
